I have been following the series since the past 1.5 years and I am crazy about it.
I must confess that the last time any series had so much of an impact on me was 15 years ago – and it was the Harry Potter series. But I had read the books first and then saw the movies during my Harry Potter stage. This time, it is completely different. I have NOT read the books of ASOIAF or A Song Of Ice And Fire series.
I know, I know. I can see some raised eyebrows there. I do have my reasons though.
I can visualize everything just the way the HBO series has made me visualisze. Lack of imagination makes every line a tad bit lengthy.
The pace. The pace. The series shows time passing in a whiff. But the books…not so much. This forms the base of my next point.
GRRM writes slow. I respect him and I understand it is not easy. However, it doesn’t help my cause. I can’t wait that long. When I start a series, I want to wrap it up soonish. This is not going to happen with ASIOAF.
If I purchase the books – physical books, I need to have the whole set. Buying five books in some edition and then the other two in “I Don’t Know What Happened To Good Cover Designers” is not something I am keen on.
The books and the series have major differences. I don’t want to cringe and get shocks every other day!
Every time I open the book, some or the other work comes up. I mean it. It is jinxed – the book. I have borrowed the first one from a friend.
If I do start reading the book, I bet I will not stop. It happened with Harry Potter. I stayed up all night with a torch and a blanket and completed 3 books in a row for 3 days straight. Eating was out of question as well. But that was student life. Now I have to juggle so many things such as a full-time job and this blog. I rarely have spare time.
I constantly keep comparing GOT to other fantasy series. I have called Ned Stark Boromir for a long long time. Walder Frey will always be Mr. Filch.
I know it in my bones that I will like a character immensely only to find that he/she is dead in the HBO series. (Alive and kicking in the books though)
Because of this guy –http://patricksponaugle.com/. He writes some freaking awesome GOT posts and I need no books for it. He is going to write posts on – Defense of Olly. AM EXCITED!
I am not affected by Spoilers so I have read a lot about the series and have at least some kind of knowledge.
Is there a famous book you have not read but want to read it desperately?
With this post…the series of Game of Thrones Challenge comes to a close. I thank Patrick (who has his own lovely blog on GOT), Santulan, Kanzensakura and everyone else who have been on exploring GOT and adding to my meagre knowledge 🙂 It was awesome sharing the same passion as you guys. Yeayy!!!! 😀
Day 30: One celebrity from the show you would love to meet IRL?
I would love to meet Arya Stark/Maisie Williams. When I was on Twitter, I used to follow her and she has a wacky sense of humor. She also has a pet tortoise and is cool in every which way. Yeay and yeay 😀 And because I am such a greedy person :P, I would also love to meet Peter Dinklage and Pedro Pascal 😀
Today, I will tell you a very weird thing. I don’t know…but ever since I have known that this man is pure evil walking free, I have hated him to the core. His sigil, his very personal sigil is that of a Mockingbird.
And know what? Everytime I see him, all I I can think of “To Kill A Mockingbird” and that is a book by Harper Lee 😛 It can be autobiography of the person who wipes this cunning little evil thing from the map of Westeros.
Day 28: If you were to be in Westeros, which profession would you like to take up?
I would be a Maester by profession. Why? Well, I have a certain thirst for knowing everything that exists in the world. The chain worn by a maester, with the links having special significance will be my badge of honour or rather, my “degrees” that I will proudly display. I would teach the kids of noble houses – another favorite occupation. Also, I would be able to heal people with injuries so, I can also be a medico!! Multitasking is indeed a fascinating thing and in Westeros, it becomes double the fun 😛
There are a number of fan theories floating like boats in the Riverlands in ASOIAF. Like you have Jon Snow being the son of a Stark and a Targaryen. This being quite an obvious choice. But the theory that really had my mind-blown was that Tyrion is supposedly a Targaryen. That will really change the Game – of thrones and otherwise 😉
Day 20: Three Words That Define Game Of Thrones For You?
I have no other words for the series, which has a bit of everything. It would be different with no magical elements. It would lose its character if it had happy endings to the story arcs. It would not have the desired effect without GRRM’s words. Give the man an award or two now 😀 😀
Given the recent developments of the show and the developments in the book that I know of, I would definitely choose Arya Stark as my trial by combat champion. I would like to pitt her against Cersei so that she can strike off her from her list and you know…;)
Point to be noted: Those of you, who do not know who Hodor is, he is this cutesy giant of a man who seems to be dimwit but is a sweetheart. He can only say one word and that is “Hodor”. There are many variations of Hodors that constitute Hodorism. Needless to say, this has led to numerous memes. I hope that the take on Hodor in the link pasted above, makes some sense even to non GOT fans 🙂 Cheers!
Don’t kill me for this…but I would like to pair up the very dashing Dario Naharis with Mellisandre. Why you ask? Well, to me they would be stark (ooh…see the pun 😛 ) opposites. The calm and composed Mellisandre will be apt for the brash and flamboyant Dario 😀
“I will hurt you for this. I don’t know how yet, but give me time. A day will come when you think yourself safe and happy, and suddenly your joy will turn to ashes in your mouth, and you’ll know the debt is paid.” (Tyrion to Cersei)
– By GRRM, A Clash of Kings
*I Googled this one up though. Bad memory.
And this one – as a tribute to the great Oberyn Martell of Drone 😀
“It is rare to meet a Lannister who shares my enthusiasm for dead Lannisters.”
